We all painted as kids, but lots of us stop doing it as we get older. I wanted to do a chatty little post about why everyone and anyone should pick up painting for fun once again, just like most of us did as children! I don’t want to ramble too much so let’s get into it!
The first thing is painting doesn’t have to be expensive. Sure, you can get super expensive paints and brushes, and that’s fab for the professional artists that are out there, but it’s totally not needed!
For those of us that just want a bit of fun you can go to places like the works and get fully kitted out with a set of paints, paintbrushes and a couple of canvases for less than a tenner. How many other creative hobbies can you get started on for that little? It can take a little trial and error, the paints I’m using at the minute are from B&M and really aren’t good at all but I know the acrylic set from the works is great so once I run out I’ll switch back to them!
When you do get round to painting, it doesn’t have to be a masterpiece. This is the main one for me. It’s okay, even as an adult, to just paint for the fun of it and not worry about how it’ll turn out. When I start a new painting I have no idea how it’s going to end up looking, I just know what kind of techniques and colours I want to use and that lets me just have fun and relax! I do very abstract stuff both because I enjoy it and because it’s one of the few things I can do and like, but there’s so many things you can try out!
That brings us to my next point which is that it’s easy to learn, kind of. Of course if you really love painting it’s something you might want to look into getting a formal education for, but for me I’m totally happy just finding techniques and tips on YouTube and Tumblr. It may not make me a master but it’s fun all the same and it always interesting to try out something new.
So if you miss painting or want to give it a go again, do it! It’s an awesome, relaxing, creative thing to do and if you go into it without expectations I reckon it’s something most people really enjoy. Get some friends together to all paint or paint with the kids in your life! Have fun!
